What is a cookie?

An HTTP cookie is a very small file that is sent from a website server to your computer. Because a web server could potentially be "talking to" many thousands of computers at any given time, the cookie is used to verify which computer the server is "talking to." A cookie is NOT a computer program, adware or spyware; it is merely a small parcel of data that is completely harmless in and of itself. A cookie is typically used to track user behavior on a website for the purposes of making the website more user friendly, for adding items to a shopping cart or for signing into the website to access parts of the website reserved for registered users. Having said that, there is the potential for malicious persons to do unscrupulous things with cookies. But in general, it is safe to accept cookies from reputable websites that you choose to navigate to.
